Lanzones Festival 2019 | Kalanrakas sa Guinsiliban | Camiguin, Philippines
Awhile back my brother-in-law asked me if I wanted to back to Camiguin to visit his Sister and family. He told me there was a festival going on in October! I was totally 100% on board! I love Camiguin Island, and it's been eleven years since I have stepped foot onto the beautiful Island.
It was the famous Lanzones Festival! The celebration held to praise the abundance harvests of the lanzones organic product grown all over the island! Camiguin is famous for lanzones!
My niece-in-law just happened to be the Queen of Purok 4 in Guinsiliban, so it was extra special as I haven't seen her since she was three (3) months old!
There were a total of 6 Puroks competing. (which are divisions within a Barangay (village).
We arrived on a Friday morning to Camiguin, and the elementary kids were hard at work prepping their costumes, practicing late hours into the evening, perfecting their routine! It was very impressive, and I felt proud to have a niece in the competition that was so dedicated and working so hard!
When Monday came the weather was good, not a cloud in the sky... it was HOT! But the elementary kids knew that this was their big day... the day they had been practicing countless hours prepping for this day. Time to suit up in their homemade costumes and get the show on the road!
If you're planning a trip to Camiguin, plan for the last couple of weeks in October, because the preliminary competition that we witnessed was very, very impressive. I was so proud of all those kids out there in their costumes with the sun beating down on them. They all gave it their all, and they all did a great job.
After the competition we had to leave to catch the ferry back to Balingoan, so we didn't know which Purok had won? Later that evening, my brother-in-law got a call from his sister letting us know that Purok 4 had won! Purok 4 will now be competing in the main festival in Mambajo, Camiguin!! So proud of those kids!
An experience we'll never forget!
