BUDGET AND MATERIALS FOR
THE BEACH HOUSE
By Marilou McConnell
We started building our beach house on the 25th of August. The week before it started, we had to cut down three coconut trees that were on the site. We had to pay the owners of the trees for 500.00php (10.00usd) each tree, a total of 1,500php (30.00usd), and had to pay 3,000php (60.00usd) total fee to cut each tree (1,000php charge each tree x 3 trees).

The next step was to purchase bamboo for our fence. We wanted it all native from the get-go and so using bamboo for the fence is such a no-brainer. We are very lucky to have a brother-in-law who, not only knows where to get the bamboo poles, but also knows how to make the fence! We spent only 5,000.00php (100usd) for the bamboo poles.
We had wood sheets from the coconut trees that we purchased and cut down, however, we did not use them because we were told they are not durable enough to use for our beach house. We would rather spend a little extra for the woods to be put in our house if it secures the foundation. We gave Mario P25,000 ($500.00) for materials to start the house. He bought sacks of cement, wood beams, bundles of woods of different sizes, wire rods, etc. to use for the structure. We hired two carpenters plus Mario, as sub-assistant. We were charged 550.00php ($11.00). We increased to 600.php ($12.00) for the main carpenter months after. We also provide them snacks in the morning and afternoon on their breaks. Both carpenters already had job commitments on weekdays, so they only could work two days a week - Sundays and Mondays. Because of this, it made the process really slow, and made the waiting for the finished product a little daunting - but rewarding in the end. In December, we hired a new main carpenter, actually, he was one of the main carpenters on the first month of building the house. However, he stopped because he couldn’t work seven days a week. When our main carpenter got an accident that hindered him from working, it was perfect timing that the other carpenter did not have any work commitments at that time, so we got him back and he worked 6 days a week for our house.
After a week of its building, we gave Mario an additional P41,000.00 ($820.00), two weeks later, we added P24,000.00, and so on and on. It totalled to P98,000 in the month of September. At this time around, I admit, it’s getting stressful because the expenses seemed to be endless. We kept telling them to just purchase them all at once, but they are not engineers so it is expected that they can’t be accurate with their estimations of materials. We added P44,700.00 more for the materials for the months of October to December and that excludes the other expenses like salary and wages, snacks for the laborers, electrical expenses, nails, vulca seal, etc. We have the receipts and other expenses records but we can’t put them all one by one, so we’ll just have a sum up.
When we planned on building this house, we estimated it to be around 80,000.00 to 100,000.00, but later we found out that when you should, at least, double the amount of your expected cost. The total amount of this beach house is P211,500.00. If you add the furniture and accessories which is about P14,940.00, the total expenses would be P226,440.00 ($4,528.80). We had hoped it to be cheaper than this, but we are truly happy to have this beach house. This is still not complete and we are looking forward to continuing building for its completion like the kitchen, rest room, pantry, etc., but we are taking our time as this is just a beach house for us to visit on the weekends. Maybe in the future when we stay here for a little longer.
