Gyeongju's UNESCO World Heritage Sites: A Museum Without Walls

Gyeongju is a city in South Korea that takes you back in time. Its numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites serve to preserve its unique history and culture. In this article, we'll take you on a tour of some of Gyeongju's most intriguing sites, including as the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village, Ancient Tombs in Inwang-dong, Woljeong Bridge, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond.

Our first trip was the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, which has more than 20 tombs dating back to the Silla Kingdom. Small burial mounds and large-scale tumuli are both types of tombs. It's amazing to see how these old tombs were built and how intricately they were designed.

Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village: After that, we went to this well-preserved traditional Korean village to see how people lived in the countryside in the 19th century. Traditional buildings, gardens, and farm equipment may be found throughout the village. The village feels like a step back in time as you walk through it.

Ancient Tombs at Inwang-dong: Our next stop was the collection of Silla tombs known as the Ancient Tombs in Inwang-dong, which are situated in a residential area. Because they have been incorporated into the neighborhood, these tombs are distinctive. The contrast between modern and historic architecture is fascinating.

Woljeong Bridge: We travelled to Woljeong Bridge, a stunning stone bridge that crosses the waters of Woljeonggyo, after visiting the tombs. The bridge, which is more than 300 years old and has a distinctive style, is a well-known landmark in Gyeongju.

The Cheomseongdae observatory, the oldest astronomical observatory still in operation in Asia, was our next trip. The observatory was constructed in the seventh century under Queen Seondeok and has withstood the test of time. It's interesting to see how people observed the skies centuries ago.

Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond: We finished our evening visiting the palace complex known as Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond, which was formerly where royal feasts and other events were held. A beautiful pond surrounds the royal complex, and at night, the pond is illuminated with vibrant lights to create a magnificent ambience.
